The psychotherapeutic dimension of clinical appointments: the case of genetic consultations

Ramona Moldovan is dual trained as a clinical psychologist and genetic counsellor (one of the 100 EBMG registered genetic counsellors). She is currently senior lecturer at the University of Manchester, UK and Babeș-Bolyai University, Romania.Her clinical and research activities are mainly focused on neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, and she is currently leading two multidisciplinary clinics, one for Huntington’s Disease and one for Psychiatric Genetic Counselling.Ramona teaches Counselling and Communication Skills, Advanced Genetic Counselling and Research Methods at the MSc course in Genetic counselling, Manchester University.
Over the last 10 years, Ramona has had leadership positions in the most relevant European professional and scientific bodies. The European Board of Medical Genetics (EBMG) that is the only professional body in Europe ensuing standards of education and practice for professionals working in genetic healthcare in Europe. Ramona was a key member of the Genetic Counselling Division and she has led several task-forces over her 8 year mandate. Her expertise and leadership were essential for assessing the curriculum for the Genetic Counselling Masters courses in Europe.
Ramona has also been a member of the Scientific Programme Committee of the European Meeting on Psychosocial Aspects of Genetics (EMPAG) and the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) Conference. These are the largest and most prestigious conferences in our discipline. Her activity there, advocating for appropriate educational/research representation of genetic counselling as a discipline, have been essential for our profession. Ramona has now been elected as a board member of the European Society of Human Genetics.
